Siloed reputation management vs. small town reputation management

The real challenge of reputation management is configuring a reputation system to closely parallel a small town.

 Recently, I was talking about the relatively new identity management area of online reputation management. Some siloed reputation management systems were mentioned (e.g., eBay, Yelp, Trip Advisor), which are the ones always mentioned whenever identity management visionaries get together. But, in reality, what we're looking for goes back much farther than the online age.

Senator questions wisdom of White House control over cybersecurity

The ranking member of the U.S. Senate's Homeland Security Committee, Susan Collins (R-Maine), today raised questions about recent calls for a direct White House role in coordinating national cybersecurity affairs.

At a hearing this morning on strategies for securing cyberspace, Collins said that putting the White House in charge would make it harder for Congress to exercise needed oversight over critical cyber policies and budgets.

In defence of silos!

Many federated identity models involve a central authentication broker, intended to break down “silos” that hold individuals’ assertions.  In practice these sorts of schemes have proven much harder to launch than expected.  Orthodox explanations for this can blame organisations for being too precious about their customers, or for treating security as a competitive differentiator.  But my analysis suggests that the total cost of a large number of traditional simple contracts turns out to be likely less than that of a smaller number of much more complex ones.
